Introduction to the blog

I am an American academic living in Mexico City for the forseeable future. This blog is not about my job. Or my research. I spend way too much time on that already, and blogging about it seems like too much of a chore.

Instead, this blog is intended to be a travel guide for anyone coming into the city looking for vinyl records and locally made micro-brews. These are two of my passions, and while it may seem an odd combination, what's better than listening to a bunch of dusty old records and enjoying an IPA (or two) among friends?

Now that I live here full time, I've spent much of my free time exploring the city looking for new digging spots, and any place that serves Mexican-made microbrews. Since this information is hard to come by (even in Spanish), I have decided to put together in one place everything that I have found in my wanderings through the city.

I am certainly not a professional beer/music critic, I am just doing this for fun. Hopefully it serves a purpose for other travelers/locals that share my interests. I am always looking for new beers to try, new places to enjoy those beers and new digging spots for LPs. If you have any suggestions, please comment on any of the posts!

  1. I am really appreciating what you're doing here regarding the craft brew scene in D.F. I would like to subscribe to new posts but I don't see the link, Help? I usually visit Guanajuato in the Winter and always look for new and good craft beer. When (if) I find any, I'll pass the info on to you. Thanks for writing.

  2. Glad you like it! Thanks for asking about email subscriptions. I just set it up, so it should now be on the left hand side of the blog.

  3. Hi~
I'm an American getting married in the Cuernavaca area in a few months. My fiance and I are big craft beer fans and can't stand the thought of having crappy beer on our big day! Can I pick your brain a bit? Starting with what the best place to order our beer from might be...I came across The Beer Company on your page...or maybe an online resource would be better? If you're willing, please let me know if there's a way I can reach you!
    Thanks in advance!

  4. No problem, I can definitely try to help out. I'd rather not post my email here, but here are a couple options. I have twitter and youtube accounts which are linked on the side, and through those you can send me a private message or send me your email. Or, you can post your email here and I'll get back to you.

  6. Gracias por la invitación, pero no tengo mucho que intercambiar. La mayoría de mi colección está de otro lado de la frontera.

  7. Thanks for this blog! I'm from Guadalajara and I visit Mexico City now and then, but rarely ever explore the city due to its overwhelming immenseness. It's way easier to hunt for microbrews and imports when someone's already spotted the best places.

  8. Hi bicyclepirate,
You seem to be the most knowledgeable person that I can find online that might be able to offer an opinion on a pipedream of mine: ie...open a Vinyl Record Shop in San Miguel de Allende. I have tens of thousands of records in most all genres but am especially strong in 70's Rock and R&B/Soul + Jazz of multiple eras. I have owned two US based record shops in the past, am US based at present and love the business. SMA would be a challenge for multiple reasons the main one in my eyes being that I am very weak on my Spanish speaking but I am getting the Plimsuer course to help. I know that SMA is not in your purview but if with all of the nuances that are not answered, you could rate this on a scale from 0 to 10...0 being sheer Idiocy, are you crazy?! to 10 Genius. Any help that you might be able to provide would be very helpful and appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Dell
