Calavera has recently released their IPA, and they have done a fine job of it. I was a little skeptical because their American Pale Ale (not yet reviewed on this site) is a pretty poor excuse for a pale ale. The Morningstar, however, is a solid example of an American-style IPA, with strong floral hops. In fact, after drinking so much beer from Mexico, I've started to forget what it is like to have a beer like this, where the hops are like a punch in the face. They dominate the beer and I love it! The only critique I have of this beer (and it is a small one), is that there is a slight sweetness to it. I noticed the sweetness right away when I first sampled it, but it started to fade the more I drank.

Right now the Morningstar IPA is only available on tap. You can find it at El Deposito, Makena, and a bar I haven't had the chance to check out, El Trappist in Condesa at Alvaro Obregón 298, Local D. I enjoyed this beer at El Deposito, where it cost 80 pesos (!) for a half liter.

Coming soon, a worldwide celebration of the India Pale Ale! If you are in Mexico, August 4th will be the perfect day to track down and enjoy the Runaway IPA by Cucapá. Maybe this event will also serve as a catalyst for more craft brewers in Mexico to start making IPAs? I can only dream...

This is the best IPA made by a Mexican brewer, hands down. It has a nice golden hue, aromas of citrus and flowers, and a good amount of hops that is not overpowering. It is also a very drinkable IPA, especially compared to some of the more extreme IPAs made by American craft brewers.

You can find the Runaway IPA in a 650ml bottle for 120 pesos at La Belga. It is also available for slightly more at the Beer Box and El Deposito.

This beer really should not be called an IPA. Slightly hoppy and bitter, but by far one of the worst IPA's I've ever had. The beer itself is too light bodied and the hop flavor is just too weak.


On its own, this beer is still very drinkable and not unpleasant, but it is very disappointing as far as IPAs go.


I had this 10oz glass at Makena for 45 pesos.
